President Obama Sets the Tone on Trade PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Thomas J. Prusa, Professor of Economics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has specialized in International Trade Policy for over two decades.  In this program, he focuses on a decision before President Obama:  Should tariffs or other trade restrictions be levied against low-cost tire imports from China.  Professor Prusa presents several surprising insights based on his study of the situation.  Would restricting cheap tire imports from China benefit American workers?  Or would a tariff have the perverse effect of killing thousands of jobs outside the tire manufacturing industry?  Listen to the interview to find out why free trade is not really a dirt word.

UPDATE:  This interview was recorded on August 4, 2009.  On September 11, 2009, the Obama administration decided to impose a 35% tariff on low-cost Chinese tire imports.  The Chinese government has publicly complained about this, and announced that they will investigate U.S. imports of auto parts and chickens to their country.
